What Can You Do with JLPT N5?

Director: Kotaro Muramoto
Principal of Nihongo Online School
In September 2019, he founded "Nihongo Online School". Since then, has been teaching Japanese online lessons, with a total of over 1,000 students.
He has designed an individualized curriculum based on student’s needs and study goal. And is conscious of making the classes speech-centered in order to improve students’ speaking skills.
The school asks students to submit homework assignments worth 2 hours per lesson to improve faster. By supporting students with these features, students are able to efficiently improve Japanese language skills.

The JLPT N5 is the entry point of your Japanese learning journey. It corresponds to A1 on the CEFR scale, roughly kindergarten-level Japanese.

Knowing what you can actually do with a JLPT N5 level, and what you can’t, saves you from both over-expecting and underestimating it.

Is the JLPT N5 an Official Diploma?

The JLPT N5 is an official certificate, internationally recognized, that can appear on a resume.

But it’s not a diploma in the academic sense. It doesn’t grant access to Japanese universities, and it’s not a standalone professional credential.

What it does signal is that you’ve completed a first measurable milestone and that you’re serious about going further.

Is the JLPT N5 Worth It?

The JLPT N5 is worth it but not for the reasons most people expect.

It won’t open job opportunities or let you live autonomously in Japan.

It gives your early learning a concrete target, a structure, and a measurable proof of progress that keeps you on track. It separates you from candidates who claim to “be learning Japanese” with nothing to show for it. In competitive contexts, that small signal of commitment matters.

What Are the Benefits of Passing the JLPT N5?

The benefits of passing JLPT N5 are mostly personal and structural :

  • It confirms you’ve mastered hiragana, katakana, and ~100 kanji
  • It gives you a benchmark to build on toward JLPT N4
  • It can support Japanese language school applications
  • It demonstrates commitment to employers or programs that ask

What Can You Do Personally with JLPT N5 Japanese?

With JLPT N5 Japanese, you can handle a real but narrow set of situations:

  • Read all hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji signs
  • Introduce yourself and exchange basic greetings
  • Order food, use IC cards, navigate train stations in major cities
  • Follow very slow, simple conversations on familiar topics

Outside these zones, friction builds fast. Administrative tasks, phone calls, anything off-script, all go well beyond N5 level.

For independent travel in Japan, N5 is a solid base, but N4 is the realistic sweet spot for comfort outside tourist areas.

What Jobs Can You Get with JLPT N5 Japanese?

Job options at JLPT N5 are limited. The level isn’t sufficient for most formal roles in Japan, but it opens the door to some positions:

  • English teaching roles
  • Manual or warehouse work with minimal on-site communication
  • Tech or finance roles at international companies where expertise matters more than language

For most structured positions, Japanese employers expect at least N3 for basic workplace interactions, and N2 for professional opportunities. Targeting English-friendly job boards like GaijinPot or bilingual recruitment agencies is the practical route at this stage.

What’s the Next Step After JLPT N5?

After JLPT N5, the natural next step is JLPT N4, then JLPT N3. N5 covers about 5–10% of what you need for functional fluency, so the habits you build now are what carry you through the levels ahead.

At Nihongo Online School, the path from zero to N5 follows the Minna no Nihongo Elementary 1 framework across 25 lessons, covering daily conversation topics from self-introductions to hobbies, directions, and polite requests. Each lesson builds the four core skills tested at N5 with a structured N5 study plan and homework after every session to reinforce what you’ve learned.
