How many kanji for JLPT N3? 

JLPT N3 requires learning 370 kanji. These intermediate characters appear frequently in everyday articles, letters, and instructions. 

If you’re studying from JLPT N5 to N3 kanji, you’ll need to master around 620 characters in total: 80 at N5, 170 at N4, and 370 at N3. 

How Many Hours to Study N3 Kanji?

Learning the 370 kanji for JLPT N3 typically takes 200-400 hours of study. 

Learners with prior Chinese character knowledge usually need around 200-250 hours, while those starting without kanji experience should expect closer to 350-400 hours to master these intermediate-level characters.

Can I Take the JLPT Without Knowing Kanji?

No, it’s not realistically possible. While the JLPT tests reading kanji rather than writing them, attempting the exam without kanji knowledge is extremely difficult at any level. 

Kanji appear throughout questions, passages, and answer choices, with specific sections dedicated to testing kanji readings and meanings. Reading hiragana-only text is also significantly slower and more confusing, making it nearly impossible to distinguish words and grasp meaning quickly enough for the time-limited format.
