Director: Kotaro Muramoto
Principal of Nihongo Online School
In September 2019, he founded "Nihongo Online School". Since then, has been teaching Japanese online lessons, with a total of over 1,000 students.
He has designed an individualized curriculum based on student’s needs and study goal. And is conscious of making the classes speech-centered in order to improve students’ speaking skills.
The school asks students to submit homework assignments worth 2 hours per lesson to improve faster. By supporting students with these features, students are able to efficiently improve Japanese language skills.

Best Online Business Japanese Courses (Tried During My Job Hunt in Japan)

Why I Needed Business Japanese for My Job Hunt

When I first came to Japan as a student, my goal was not only to master daily conversation but also to find a job and build a career here. That meant going far beyond “survival Japanese.” If you want to work in a Japanese company, you need to know how to:

  • Write professional emails using keigo
  • Prepare a self-introduction (自己紹介) for interviews
  • Explain your career goals (志望動機)
  • Understand office etiquette and hierarchy

At my school, ISI Language and Career School, I was very fortunate. Unlike many other schools that focus mainly on JLPT preparation, ISI had a solid Business Japanese curriculum. We practiced interviews, wrote resumes, and learned how to speak formally in a company environment.

But I didn’t stop there. I also joined extra programs through WeWorld Global Reach (link). These programs were especially practical: I could do mock interviews with professionals and even join real job interviews. One of them was for a Burger King store manager position (店長職), which gave me direct experience in using formal Japanese under pressure.

I also studied with several business Japanese textbooks, each one focused on a specific area—workplace manners, email writing, or keigo practice. This gave me a strong foundation.

Still, I felt that to be truly confident, I needed to explore other resources that could help me review on my own time. That’s when I started looking into business Japanese courses online, apps, and YouTube channels. Below I’ll share the ones I found most effective.

italki – Personalized Online Lessons

Best for: Students who want 1-on-1 coaching with native teachers.

On italki, you can find teachers who specialize in online Japanese classes for professionals. During my job hunt, I tried a few lessons with different tutors, and the flexibility was the biggest advantage. I could book a 30–60 minute session whenever I had free time, and the teachers would adapt to my needs.

For example, before one interview I practiced my 志望動機 (reason for applying) and my 自己紹介. The teacher corrected not only the grammar but also my tone and posture. That kind of feedback is hard to get from books or apps.

The downside is that the quality depends on the teacher you choose, and it can become expensive if you take many lessons. But if you need personalized preparation for job interviews, I highly recommend at least a few italki sessions.

Hello Sensei – Finding Freelance Tutors

Best for: Short-term or local tutoring (both online and in-person).

Hello Sensei is a platform where you can find freelance tutors in Japan. Many of them offer Business Japanese lessons focused on keigo, interview practice, and workplace situations.

I didn’t use Hello Sensei as much as italki, but I did book a couple of sessions before interviews. What I liked was that some tutors were very affordable, and you can sometimes meet in person if you live in Japan.

The drawback is that it’s less structured—each tutor has their own style, and you have to communicate your goals clearly. Still, it’s a flexible and budget-friendly option if you want quick practice with a native speaker.

Attain Online Japanese (Business Series)

Best for: Structured learning with clear video lessons.

Attain is a company that provides online Japanese courses on platforms like Udemy. They have a Business Japanese series that covers keigo, workplace expressions, and even cultural explanations about office life in Japan.

I tried some of their courses out of curiosity, and they were surprisingly detailed. For example, one lesson focused on how to answer the phone in a company, while another explained the proper way to hand over business cards (名刺交換). These are small details that can make a big difference in the workplace.

The biggest advantage is that Attain courses are relatively affordable and you can repeat lessons anytime. The downside is that it’s more of a lecture style—there’s no interaction like in italki or Hello Sensei. But if you want a solid foundation of business Japanese expressions, it’s an excellent option.

Apps for Business Japanese

Best for: Daily review and learning on the go.

During my job hunt, I used apps a lot, especially on the train. While apps are not a replacement for real practice, they are a great way to reinforce vocabulary and expressions.

Some apps I found useful were:

  • LingoDeer – They have special lessons for business Japanese, where you can practice keigo expressions and polite vocabulary.
  • Mondo – This app connects you with native speakers around the world. You can exchange messages and sometimes get corrections on your keigo.
  • JLPT Sensei app – Although focused on JLPT, it has sections on polite expressions that overlap with business situations.

Apps are perfect for consistency. Just 10–15 minutes a day can keep you fresh and confident before your next interview.

YouTube Channels for Business Japanese

Best for: Free learning with bite-sized lessons.

YouTube turned out to be one of the most helpful tools for me. Whenever I had time, I would search for channels that specialized in business Japanese for job interviews and work. Some of my favorites were:

  • Nihongo no Mori – Famous for JLPT prep, but they also have great videos on business keigo and polite conversation.
  • Attain Online Japanese (official channel) – They upload free samples of their courses, including business roleplays.
  • JapanesePod101 – While broader, they have entire playlists on interviews, workplace manners, and keigo.

The best part of YouTube is that it’s free and accessible anytime. Of course, it’s not as structured as a course, but it’s a fantastic supplement.

Comparing These Options

To summarize my experience:

  • School & WeWorld programs: Best for complete preparation, but not everyone has access.
  • italki: Best for personalized feedback and interview practice.
  • Hello Sensei: Flexible, budget-friendly, and sometimes in-person.
  • Attain: Affordable structured courses with clear explanations.
  • Apps: Great for daily review and vocabulary practice.
  • YouTube: Free and convenient, perfect for quick lessons.

By combining these, I always had something to rely on—structured lessons, personal coaching, and quick daily reviews.

My Recommendation for Job Seekers

Looking back, I feel very lucky that ISI Language and Career School gave me such a strong foundation in Business Japanese, and that WeWorld Global Reach gave me the chance to test myself in real interviews. But what really helped me stay confident was exploring online business Japanese courses, apps, and YouTube channels.

If you’re preparing for job hunting in Japan, my advice is this:

  • Get a structured base (through a school, Attain, or textbooks).
  • Use personalized lessons (like italki) when you need feedback.
  • Keep your study consistent with apps and YouTube.

This combination will prepare you not only for interviews, but also for the daily challenges of working in Japan. Whether you are abroad or already living here, you can start today and take one step closer to your career in Japan.
