Unlike traditional tests, it only evaluates passive skills through a multiple-choice exam scored out of 180 points, using a weighted score system based on statistical models rather than a simple count of correct answers.

Although it’s difficult to make direct correspondences between learning Japanese as a foreign language and learning it as a native language, the content covered by the JLPT N5 is generally learned during the first year or even the beginning of the second year of elementary school in Japan.

This comparison remains approximate because Japanese children acquire their language through natural immersion without formally studying grammatical rules, vocabulary, etc., unlike foreign learners.

How many questions does the JLPT N5 have?

The JLPT N5 exam includes a total of 91 questions distributed across 3 main sections: Language Knowledge JLPT N5 (vocabulary + writing), Grammar and Reading Comprehension, and Listening Comprehension. This balanced structure allows for effective evaluation of all facets of a beginner learner’s passive linguistic skills.

Best tips for memorizing N5 JLPT vocabulary fast

Fast memorization strategies for vocabulary

To quickly memorize the 800 JLPT vocabulary N5 words, use the Anki application which automatically reminds you of words at the right time for long-term memorization. Create simple cards with the Japanese word on one side and its translation on the other, or download an existing deck.

Study words by themes (food, family, transportation, etc.) rather than alphabetically to better retain vocabulary in context. Associate each new word with a mental image or memorable situation: the more surprising the image, the better you’ll remember the word.

Practice 15 minutes of immersion daily: label objects at home with their Japanese names, listen to beginner mini-dialogues during your commute, or use smartphone vocabulary games.

Follow a simple review program: review new words after 1 day, then 3 days, then one week, then two weeks to permanently fix them in your memory more quickly.

Combining JLPT N5 Vocabulary with Grammar and Kanji

Rather than studying vocabulary, grammar, and the 100 kanji of JLPT N5 separately, adopt an integrated approach.

Learn each kanji in the context of complete words. For example, don’t just memorize the kanji 食 (eat) in isolation, but through JLPT N5 vocabulary with sentences like 食べる (taberu – to eat) and 食事 (shokuji – meal). Similarly, for each new grammar point, create sentences using the vocabulary you’ve just learned.

For each study session, dedicate 15 minutes to vocabulary, then 15 minutes to corresponding kanji, followed by 15 minutes to JLPT N5 grammar using these same words. This rotation keeps your brain engaged and creates stronger neural connections between these elements, allowing you not only to memorize vocabulary quickly but also kanji and grammar.

To prepare for JLPT N5 even more effectively, combine these methods with professional guidance from Nihongo Online School teachers. Thanks to our program specially designed for JLPT N5 and our online Japanese courses, you can reach N5 level in just 3 months.
