Director: Kotaro Muramoto
Principal of Nihongo Online School
In September 2019, he founded "Nihongo Online School". Since then, has been teaching Japanese online lessons, with a total of over 1,000 students.
He has designed an individualized curriculum based on student’s needs and study goal. And is conscious of making the classes speech-centered in order to improve students’ speaking skills.
The school asks students to submit homework assignments worth 2 hours per lesson to improve faster. By supporting students with these features, students are able to efficiently improve Japanese language skills.

Moving to Japan for work is a major step in both a career and a life. Before seriously considering relocation, one of the first questions that comes up is: Do I need to master the language and how long does it take to learn Japanese before moving?

This article breaks down realistic timelines for each core component of the language, so you can visualize your relocation more concretely and plan your preparation around your actual schedule.

How long does it take to learn enough Japanese to survive in Japan

For most professionals moving to Japan, “enough Japanese” to survive means being able to handle daily life outside the office while managing basic workplace interactions. The FSI estimates 2,200 hours to reach full professional fluency but functional survival in Japan is achievable well before that.

A realistic minimum before moving to Japan is somewhere between JLPT N4 and N3, which takes 300 to 600 hours of Japanese study depending on your pace and method.

Here’s what that means across each core component of the language.

Learn Kanji characters

For professionals moving to Japan, kanji is unavoidable unless you work in a fully international environment. There are 2,136 jōyō kanji in total, but you do not need to know all of them before relocating.

Here’s a typical progression:

Kanji milestoneJLPT levelApprox. study time
~100 kanjiN52-3 months
~600 kanjiN31-1.5 years
~2,000 kanjiN13-5 years

You do not need to master kanji before you start speaking. If your relocation is approaching, kanji study can progress in parallel with conversation practice rather than serving as a prerequisite.

Learn Japanese grammar

For someone preparing to work in Japan, the fundamentals of Japanese grammar needed for daily and professional life can be learned within the first 3 to 6 months of structured study.

From there, grammar development becomes less about isolated study and more about encountering structures in real conversations and workplace situations. The real challenge for working professionals is keigo (honorific language), which typically requires one to two years of targeted practice beyond the beginner level to master.

At Nihongo Online School, grammar is always anchored in real communication situations rather than abstract drills, significantly accelerating practical retention.

Learn Japanese writing and reading

Japanese uses three writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Hiragana and katakana can be learned quickly, most dedicated learners can read and write both within two to four weeks.

Kanji is what extends the timeline, and for professionals relocating to Japan, reading ability is closely linked to workplace integration.

Timeline to learn Japanese kanji :

Reading MilestoneJLPT LevelApproximate Timeline
Master hiragana and katakanaN52–4 weeks
Read basic signs, menus, and simple messagesN5–N43–6 months
Navigate daily documents, transportation, and basic workplace emailsN31–1.5 years
Read most everyday written content comfortablyN22–3 years

Writing kanji by hand is becoming less essential since most professional communication is digital. However, handwriting remains one of the most effective tools for memorization, especially in the early stages.

How long do you need to learn spoken Japanese before living there?

For professionals relocating to Japan, spoken Japanese is often the most urgent priority.

Based on learning data from over 1,000 students at Nihongo Career, conversation ability follows a measurable progression. Using a 10-level scale anchored in real-life communication, learners typically advance one level every 4 to 6 months with two 60-minute lessons per week and consistent self-study.

Conversation LevelWhat you can do at work and in daily lifeStudy time from scratch
Level 3–4 (N4 equiv.)Handle basic daily interactions, answer simple workplace questions6–12 months
Level 5 (N3 equiv.)Explain your role, follow ~30–40% of meetings, manage daily life independently~12 months
Level 7 (N2 equiv.)Communicate smoothly with colleagues, follow 80%+ of meetings, express opinions logically~18 months

For most professionals relocating to Japan, arriving at Conversation Level 4 to 5 gives you a solid foundation to keep improving through daily immersion on the job. Twelve months of structured spoken practice before departure puts you in a strong position.

At Nihongo Online School, spoken Japanese is the core of every lesson. If you’re preparing for a relocation, our online Japanese classes are structured around exactly this kind of conversation-first progression.

What about hours needed to learn Business Japanese?

For professionals who need to operate fully in Japanese, business Japanese is a distinct challenge that goes well beyond conversational fluency.

Based on Nihongo Online School’s business Japanese course, reaching a professional communication level takes approximately 18 to 24 months from an intermediate base, or 3 to 4 years from scratch. In JLPT terms, this corresponds to N2 to N1.

GoalTimeframeWhat becomes possible
Basic workplace communication6 monthsFollow simple instructions, answer questions in meetings
Functional professional Japanese12 monthsExplain your role, follow 30–40% of meeting content
Smooth professional communication18-24 monthsHandle client interactions, use keigo confidently

Many professionals relocating to Japan work in environments where some English is used alongside Japanese. In those cases, reaching Conversation Level 5 to 6 before arriving is often enough to function, with full business-level fluency developing naturally over the following 1 to 2 years on the job.
