When and How It’s Used
The conditional form 「~ば」 is similar to 「~たら」 and corresponds to “if” in English.
However, unlike 「~たら」, which can be used freely in many situations, 「~ば」 has specific grammatical restrictions that learners must follow.
One important rule concerns the type of verb used before 「~ば」:
- When the verb before 「~ば」 is an action verb
(e.g.食べます[Tabemasu] eat, 歩きます[Arukimasu] walk),
you cannot use expressions of intention, commands, requests, or permission in the clause that follows.
Incorrect:
× 風邪をひけば、この薬を飲め。 Kaze o hikeba kono kusuri o nome.
“If you catch a cold, take this medicine.”
→ This sounds grammatically unnatural because “飲め” is a command. - When the verb before 「~ば」 is a state verb
(e.g., あります[Arimasu] exist things, います[Imasu] exist person, potential verbs, adjectives),
expressions of intention, commands, requests, and permission may follow.
Example:
来月お金があれば、新しい服を買おうと思っています。 Raigetsu okane ga areba, atarashii fuku o kaou to omotte imasu.
“If I have money next month, I’m thinking of buying new clothes.”
In short, 「~ば」 works naturally when the condition describes a state, and the result expresses the speaker’s will or plan.
But when the condition is an action, such combinations are not allowed.
Understanding this rule helps you use 「~ば」 more accurately and naturally in conversation.
