The expression 「～んですか」 is a natural and polite way to ask about someone’s reason or situation in Japanese. It sounds softer and more conversational than the plain 「～ですか」 or 「どうして～ですか」, which can feel too direct.
Native speakers often use 「どうして～んですか」 to show curiosity or concern in a friendly way.

When and How It’s Used

Use 「～んですか」 when you want to ask about someone’s situation or background politely.
Among these, 「どうして～んですか」 is a special case—it asks for the reason or cause of an action, and the natural reply is 「～んです」, explaining the reason.

For example:

• Q: どうして会社を休んだんですか。(Why did you take a day off?)
  A: 頭が痛かったんです。(I had a headache.)
  

However, not all questions with 「～んですか」 require an 「～んです」 answer.
When the question simply asks for confirmation or new information—for instance, 「ギターを弾くんですか(Gitā o hikun desuka)」(Do you play the guitar?) or 「先生なんですか(Sensei nan desuka)」(Are you a teacher?)—you should respond normally, such as 「はい、弾きます(Hai, hikimasu)」 or 「いいえ、違います(Iie, chigaimasu)」.

In other words, the 「～んです」 reply is used only when the question is about reasons or circumstances, as in 「どうして～んですか」, but not when the question seeks facts or confirmation.

This distinction helps your Japanese sound natural and appropriate to each situation.
