■2 Types of Adjective

there are two types of Japanese adjectives. Adjectives are an important part of learning Japanese because they are used to describe things!

Japanese adjectives: ■1 い-adjectives & ■2 な-adjectives

An “い-adjective” is an adjective that possess the “…い” form when modifying a noun.A “な-adjective” is an adjective that accompanies “な” when modifying a noun.

■1 い-adjective Forms

Japanese adjectives have 2 tenses: non-past and past. More specifically, there’re 4 forms: non-past affirmative, non-past negative, past affirmative, and past negative.You use the end of the “い-adjective” to conjugate the proper form.

かれのへやは、ひろいです。

Kareno heyawa hiroi desu.

His room is big. 

わたしのいえは、おおきくないです。

Watashino iewa ookikunai desu.

My house is not big. 

このくつが、ほしかったです。

Kono kutsuga hosikatta desu.

I wanted this shoes.

■2 な-adjectives form

な-adjectives have 2 tenses: non-past and past. Specifically, there’re 4 types: non-past affirmative, non- past negative, past affirmative, and past negative. な-adjectives don’t conjugate by itself. 

きのうのよるは、とてもしずかでした

Kinouno yoruwa, totemo shizuka deshita.

It was very quiet last night.

このまちは、きれいではありません

Konomachiwa, kireidewaarimasen.

This town is not clean.

きのうのテストは、かんたんではありませんでした

Kinouno tesutowa, kantan dewaarimasendeshita.

The test I took yesterday was not easy. 

でんしゃにいたひとは、とてもしんせつでした

Denshani itahitowa, totemo sinsetsu Deshita.

The man in the train was very kind.
